Notify

a tap on the shoulder, not a pile of pings

What should trigger a notification — and how do I send nudges people actually appreciate instead of resent?

Design your nudges a trigger inventory · 12 artifacts · reminders people thank you for
The painful truth

You don't have an attention problem.
You have a notification problem.

It's one of two extremes: you don't notify at all and people forget you, lapse, and quietly churn — or you over-notify until every ping triggers an eye-roll and an unsubscribe. There's no strategy for what warrants a notification, when to send it, or how to make it feel helpful. Sound familiar?

You don't notify at all — afraid of being annoying. Silence costs more than noise: people forget, lapse, and churn without ever filing a single complaint.

You send everything at the same frequency. A renewal reminder and a "new feature" update don't deserve the same cadence — so the message that matters drowns in the ones that don't.

Your notifications sound like a machine wrote them. "Your subscription will expire in 3 days" lands very differently from "Hey, your membership's up Friday — want me to handle it?"

You never consolidate. Five separate pings in one day when a single digest would have been more welcome — and far more effective.

Before → After

From "mute, unsubscribe, forget" to nudges people thank you for

Before this course

"I either don't notify at all — people forget about me, lapse their membership, miss events — or I send too many reminders and people unsubscribe. I have no system for what warrants a notification, how often is too often, or how to write one that doesn't sound like a robot."

After this course

"I have a complete notification inventory: every trigger mapped to a message, every message timed to a cadence, every cadence tuned to the channel. People tell me my reminders are actually helpful. My reactivation rate is up, my unsubscribe rate is down, and I never wonder 'should I send this?' — the system answers that."

The shift: notifications aren't interruptions to minimize — they're touchpoints to design. Get trigger logic, timing, and tone right, and people thank you for the reminder instead of muting you.

What you'll build

You don't just watch lessons.
You leave with 12 real artifacts.

Working documents you actually use — not theory about notifications. By the end they add up to a full trigger inventory, a cadence calendar, and a copy library tuned so every nudge feels welcome.

The course map

Three moves: pick the triggers → time them right → tune the tone

Module 1

Triggers

Inventory · prioritize · rules

The events and behaviors that actually warrant a nudge.

  • Inventory Map every event that should trigger a notification — signups, milestones, inactivity, renewals, deadlines
  • Prioritize Rank triggers by importance and urgency — not everything deserves a ping
  • Rules Build trigger rules — conditions, thresholds, suppression logic
  • Apply Directory / niche triggers — member activity, expiring memberships, new matches
Module 2

Timing

Cadence · windows · throttle

Frequency and spacing that respects attention.

  • Cadence Set frequency by channel and trigger type — daily, weekly, event-driven
  • Windows Find the best send times and respect quiet hours
  • Throttle Cap notifications per period — digest vs. individual
  • Apply Directory / niche timing — activity windows, renewal cycles, event proximity
Module 3

Tone

Voice · types · test

Language that feels helpful, not robotic.

  • Voice Write copy that sounds like a helpful human, not an automated system
  • Types Calibrate tone by type — celebratory, urgent, gentle, informational
  • Test Measure open, action, and unsubscribe rates — and close the loop
  • Apply Directory / niche notification voice — member comms, admin alerts, updates

Honest filter

Is this course your right next step?

This is for you if…

  • People drift away in silence — they forget to log in, miss events, don't come back.
  • Or you over-remind, and people mute, unsubscribe, or tune you out.
  • You have no rule for what warrants a notification, how often, or how to word it.
  • You want reminders that feel like a helpful tap on the shoulder, not a robotic alert.
  • You want 12 real artifacts ending in a notification audit checklist you run quarterly.

This is NOT for you if…

  • You're not turning responses into relationships yet — do Reply first.
  • You already run a tuned, well-loved notification system and just want advanced tactics.
  • You want a single email-tool tutorial — this is the strategy beneath every channel.
  • You want to automate away every human touch — this makes automated moments feel human.

Where this fits

The fifth step of the Touchpoints journey

Notify is course 5 of 6. Reply turned responses into relationships; Notify keeps those relationships warm between conversations. It comes fifth because once people are engaged, the risk is drifting apart in silence or driving them off with noise — so you design nudges that land at the right time with the right tone. Then Feedback closes the loop by listening back.

You are here — make every nudge welcome.

Learn with others

You're not doing this alone

Every lesson has a discussion where you share your work and read how others approached the same prompt — so you see the patterns, not just your own answer.

S2

“Post your experience, read two others, and notice the patterns.”

Per-pillar discussion forums are coming as the community grows.

Honest answers

Before you decide

How often is too often?+

There's no universal number, but there is a diagnostic: if your unsubscribe rate per notification beats your action rate, you're over-notifying. The cadence framework helps you find the sweet spot.

Should I let people customize their notification preferences?+

Yes — but don't make them do the work upfront. Start with sensible defaults, then offer granular controls once they've experienced your notifications. The course covers the progressive-disclosure approach.

Push vs. email vs. in-app — which channel?+

Different channels for different urgency levels. The course maps trigger types to channels so you're not firing a push notification for a "new blog post" when an email digest would do.

Won't more notifications just annoy people?+

Only the wrong ones. A well-triggered, well-timed, well-worded nudge increases engagement — the course is about sending those and suppressing the rest.

I run a directory business — does this still apply?+

Yes. The fourth lesson of each module maps notifications onto directory moments — new member activity, expiring memberships, new matches, community events — with a parallel niche track.

What do I actually walk away with?+

12 working artifacts — from a trigger inventory and cadence calendar to a tone calibration guide, an effectiveness dashboard, and a quarterly notification audit.

What does a notification people actually welcome look like — and how do I nudge without ever becoming noise?

Stop choosing between silence and spam. Map the triggers, time them right, and write them so people thank you for the reminder.
